The Storyteller

He would stop and mesmerize at the little red plum hearts breathing quietly on the flat melamine plate,

Then he would take a puff from his glaring cigar and send the swirls of smoke on their heels towards the rusty ceiling,

While the lazy ash particles would descend idly and always found solace on his protruding belly,

The unfortunate spiders would come tumbling down, chocked by those angry swirls of smoke

And the lucky ones would bounce back, dust their feet and take off, leaving a trail of dust behind, before his large wet boot came down upon them to decide their fate.

While the doomed ones would be crashed, sending their remaining lives scattering on the uneven, dusty floor

His eyes would then quickly sweep the floor searching for the escape convicts, and when there were none, he would grit his teeth and irately chew on the red hearts

The fire would take a majestic walk around the fireplace consuming each little piece of firewood around, while the big man would occasionally throw his rough hands over the fire, rub them together and a bizarre smile would decorate his round face

He would then begin to articulate of the long ago tales rarely told, of the unmarked roads less travelled, of the secrets tightly concealed, of the people we never got to meet and of the creatures that never were, only our ears met them.

At regular intervals, he would pause his tale, and stare through the squeaky wooden window, as if to make sure that the creatures that never were hadn’t come to be. And when he was satisfied, he would retire back to his uncomfortable rocking chair and resume his tale.

At casual moments, the dream fairy would come on his daily mission, to persuade us to return with her to dreamland. So like always, I’d leave all my belongings behind because she would always promise that dreamland had everything, and it was always true.

When reality struck us at daybreak, we would search for those brighter lights, friendly smiles, the crystal waters, the beautiful stars, colorful skies and the dream fairy!

So we would tread carefully through the day, lest we strode harshly on the unmarked paths, lest the spiders that lost their lives came to haunt us, lest we met the people or creatures that never were, but more so, lest we lost the bliss of the dream.

Some great quotes by great people

"Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill."

                     ~Buddha

"Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words."

                 ~Robert Frost

"Inspiration comes from so many sources. Music, other fiction, the non-fiction I read, TV shows, films, news reports, people I know, stories I hear, misheard words or lyrics, dreams... Motivation? The memory of the rush I get from a really good writing session - even on a bad day, I know I'll find that again if I keep going."

                   ~Trudi Canavan
